For an ongoing ZIM project Herrmann Ultraschall donated components worth 20,000 € to Karlsruhe University.
The ultrasonic converter and the ultrasonic generator will be used in the department of manufacturing technology and production of the Institute of Materials and Processes at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, which is one of the two central institutes for research and development at the university. These components will be used in various research and development schemes, particularly for the process of ultrasonic vibration lapping for processing of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). Ultrasonic vibration lapping is one of a range of innovative processing and manufacturing processes for brittle-hard materials, such as ceramics, glass and FRP.
With the new components donated by Herrmann Ultraschall, greater power outputs can be achieved and the processing speeds can be increased. Due to the fully digital generator technology, in-depth insights into the production process are possible in real time during processing. In this way, tools and their vibrating behavior can be optimized and the processing quality can be improved further.
In ultrasonic vibration lapping, the ultrasonic converter converts electric alternating voltage from the generator into mechanical vibration. By this, a tool, which corresponds to the negative shape of the contour to be created, is set into vibration. Consequently, the required contour is hammered into the brittle material in the required contour by means of hard abrasive particles. At first, this results in extremely thin micro-cracks, which transition into macro-cracks and ultimately cause release of fragments from the workpiece surface. With this method it is possible to produce most complex geometries with sharp and precise corners, even from brittle-hard materials.
Thomas Herrmann was particularly pleased about the opportunity to support the research project and university education at the Karlsruhe University with his donation, because it was there that he obtained his mechanical engineering diploma 27 years ago.
